Building a local LLM rig in the RAMageddon (October 2026)

Model choice still comes first. The hardware that fits it got more expensive this month, and the useful routes are the ones with a date and a source.

The short version

  • GPU street prices jumped since November 2025. Tom's Hardware's US tracker, last updated 16 Oct 2026, lists an RTX 5090 best price of $7,488 against a $1,999 MSRP. 3DCenter's German mid-price for the same card moved from €2,600–2,900 in November 2025 to €6,000–6,800 in early October 2026, which they calculate as +132%.
  • DDR5 moved too. Tom's Hardware on 14 Oct 2026 put the cheapest US 32GB DDR5-6000 kit at $449.97 and said RAM prices are up by more than 500% since last year (US price). On idealo the same evening, a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit in Germany started at €489.99 incl. shipping. No checked EU price from last year is printed here.
  • For a local model, start from VRAM class, not from a new 8 GB card. The routes below use catalog rows where they exist: a used 12 GB card for small models, a new 16 GB Radeon when 16 GB is the target, a used 24 GB card before a 32 GB flagship, and unified-memory machines when the model needs more than one gaming GPU.

What happened to prices

RTX 5090, US price. Tom's Hardware GPU price tracker, last updated 16 October 2026: best US price $7,488, lowest-ever US price $1,999, MSRP $1,999. Tom's Hardware tracker A 17 Oct 2026 spot check on the same site found third-party Amazon listings around $8,500, Newegg listings around $7,300, none at Best Buy, and none on NVIDIA's marketplace or at Micro Center. Tom's Hardware, 17 Oct 2026. $7,488 lowest US price on 16 Oct 2026 vs a $1,999 MSRP (Tom's Hardware). Third-party listings ran ~$7,300–$8,500 on 17 Oct.

Germany, since November 2025. 3DCenter's 3/4 October 2026 market note uses a weighted mid-price, (2 × lowest + 1 × highest listed) / 3. RTX 5090: November 2025 €2,600–2,900 to October 2026 €6,000–6,800, +132%. Average NVIDIA RTX 50 series +66%, and +57% without the 5090. AMD RX 9000 average +46%. Intel Arc +38%. 3DCenter, 3/4 October 2026.

The same note, still since November 2025: RX 9060 XT 16GB €330–380 to €520–590 (+57%); RX 9060 XT 8GB €260–320 to €440–510 (+65%); RTX 5060 Ti 16GB €410–450 to €680–850 (+74%); RTX 5060 €270–310 to €420–490 (+56%); Arc B580 €240–280 to €330–410 (+41%); RTX 5080 €1,000–1,140 to €1,540–1,650 (+51%). Those are price ranges, not a single shop receipt.

3DCenter's 15 October 2026 follow-up puts the RTX 5090 mid-October range at €6,700–7,500. It counts 28 listed variants, 24 with regular in-stock offers, and 49 usable Geizhals offers, down from about 100 on 7 Oct. The September 2025 reference on that page is ab €2,319. 3DCenter, 15 October 2026.

DDR5, 32GB (2×16) DDR5-6000. Tom's Hardware, 14 Oct 2026: cheapest US kit $449.97. The piece says prices are up by more than 500% since last year, and that the same class was $400 in August 2026. That year-on-year line is a US price, not an EU one. Tom's Hardware, 14 Oct 2026 idealo, data 17 Oct 2026 22:53: Team T-Force Vulcan 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 (FLRD532G6000HC30DC01) from €503.43 incl. shipping. Crucial Pro 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36 (CP2K16G60C36U5B) from €489.99 incl. shipping, a marketplace offer, with the next listed offer at €536.65. idealo, Team Group idealo, Crucial. No verified EU price from last year is included.

Outlook, and these are forecasts. TrendForce, 30 Sep 2026: conventional DRAM contract prices +10–15% quarter on quarter in 4Q26, and PC DRAM supply could decline in 2027. TrendForce, 30 Sep 2026 TechPowerUp, 2 Oct 2026, quoting Micron's CEO on the 30 Sep 2026 earnings call: supply-demand "much tighter in fiscal 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026", and no line of sight to balance. TechPowerUp, 2 Oct 2026 Contract-price tables that are members-only are not quoted here.

Catalog PC builds still use DDR4 RAM lines from the 16 Oct fact-check: 64GB DDR4 €600 and 128GB DDR4 €2,460, plus rest of system (estimate). Those build totals were not repriced for this DDR5 move.

VRAM class and the route

Prices incl. VAT, excl. shipping. USD = FX estimate, excl. sales tax. A catalog row uses its stored label. A 3DCenter span is a price range. A dollar figure from Tom's Hardware stays a US price. The euro amounts below are the catalog figures, not a second conversion, except where a row is already marked estimate.

8 GB: do not buy a new 8 GB card for a local model. 3DCenter's October 2026 German ranges are RTX 5060 €420–490 and RX 9060 XT 8GB €440–510. The catalog's used RTX 3060 12GB is €257 (used (median of sold listings), pcprice.watch, 2026-10-16) and has 4 GB more. Route: GeForce RTX 3060 12GB. Calculator: 8B-class Q4 at this card's euro price.

12 GB: the same used RTX 3060 12GB. A new alternative, as a price range, is the Arc B580 12GB at €330–410 (3DCenter, October 2026, since November 2025). Calculator: Llama 3.1 8B Q4.

16 GB: Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB, €564 (new (lowest in-stock DE board), 2026-10-17). The stored figure is €563.90, which the euro formatter rounds. 3DCenter's range is €520–590. The catalog's GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 16GB is €899 (new (lowest in-stock EU), 2026-10-16). RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is €680–850 in that 3DCenter note. 320 GB/s and this catalog's AMD utilisation of 0.4 mean slower decode than the bandwidth number suggests. The stack is ROCm/Vulkan, not CUDA. RX 9060 XT 16GB row. Calculator: Qwen2.5 14B Q4.

24 GB: GeForce RTX 3090 24GB, €1,224 (used (median of sold listings), pcprice.watch, 2026-10-16). Alternative: Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24GB at €1,254, the GPU PRIX 3-month median, because the in-stock new listing is more than 1.5× that median. Calculator: Qwen2.5 32B Q4.

32 GB: GeForce RTX 5090 32GB is €6,299 in the catalog (PriceSquirrel, 2026-10-16). 3DCenter's German mid-October range is €6,700–7,500. Two used 3090s are 2 × €1,224 = €2,448, cards only, and that is 48 GB for less than half of one 5090. The unified-memory option in the catalog is Mac mini M6 32GB at €1,530 (estimate). Radeon AI PRO R9700 and Intel Arc Pro B70 stay the 32 GB spec-page alternatives on the 5090 guide, with no new price added here. Calculator: 32B Q4 near the Mac mini estimate.

48 GB: Dual RTX 3090, 48 GB is the catalog build total, €5,408, and that total is an estimate (DDR4 RAM line plus rest of system, not repriced). GMKtec EVO-X2 (Ryzen AI Max+ 395) 64GB is €2,199 (new (idealo, prepayment, incl. shipping)). AMD's VGM note on that row is 48 GB dedicated graphics memory. Mac mini M4 Pro 64GB is €1,890 (used-market amount that cannot be checked). Calculator: Llama 3.3 70B Q4.

96–128 GB: GMKtec EVO-X2 (Ryzen AI Max+ 395) 128GB stores €3,799.96 and the formatter shows €3,800 (new (idealo, marketplace, delivery unknown, incl. shipping)). AMD's VGM figure scored here is 96 GB dedicated, not the 112 GB the iGPU can technically address and not the full 128 GB. Compare Mac Studio M4 Max 128GB at €3,290 (used-market, unverifiable), Mac Studio M5 Max 128GB at €6,000 (estimate), and Mac Studio M5 Ultra 96GB at €6,649 (Belgian Apple Store). One RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell 96GB was from €16,509 on idealo, data 17 Oct 2026 22:53, OEM, delivery by 9 Nov. That card is not a catalog row. idealo, PNY RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell. Calculator: Qwen2.5 72B Q4.

Above 128 GB: Mac Studio M5 Ultra 256GB at €12,500 (estimate). The Belgian Apple Store page opened on 17 Oct 2026 listed M5 Ultra presets including 96 GB and did not list a 512 GB preset in that extract, so 512 GB is not a catalog row. Calculator: 70B Q4 on the 256 GB estimate.

Used Tesla V100 32GB cards from data-centre clear-outs are a growing budget route; they're passively cooled, PCIe 3.0, and CUDA 13 dropped Volta, so prebuilt llama.cpp binaries need compiling yourself. XDA Developers, 28 Jul 2026 No euro price is printed. The dollar figures in that July piece are left out.

What to skip

  • A new 8 GB gaming card. The German ranges above already sit near or above the used 12 GB card, with less memory for the model.
  • Paying current RTX 5090 prices when 32 GB is the goal and a used 24 GB card, or two of them, still fits the model. The 5090 row stays in the catalog for people who need that one card. It is not the default route.

Caveats

  • Unified memory is not VRAM. A Mac or a Strix Halo box shares one pool with the system. The fit math subtracts a reserve on Macs. On the two EVO-X2 rows it uses AMD's VGM dedicated figure instead, and the note says so.
  • Strix Halo bandwidth of 256 GB/s is AMD's FAQ figure, AMD Variable Graphics Memory FAQ. It is not a measured tokens/s result. The 64 GB and 128 GB idealo offers differ in seller and delivery. Read the row note before treating either as a shop you can order today.
  • A used card can be a bargain or a worn board. The 3060 and 3090 catalog prices are used medians of sold listings, not a warranty. Passive data-centre cards need case airflow. Nothing on this page is a buy button.
